Malignant Primary Bone Tumors
Osteosarcoma
Including conventional osteosarcoma, telangiectatic osteosarcoma, small cell osteosarcoma, parosteal osteosarcoma, periosteal osteosarcoma, post-radiation osteosarcoma, Paget osteosarcoma, extraskeletal osteosarcoma
Osteosarcoma is a type of malignant bone cancer. It starts in the cells that form bones and often occurs around the knee and shoulder but can occur in other locations of the body. Symptoms can include pain, swelling, and sometimes a noticeable lump. At City of Hope, we will develop a comprehensive treatment plan that will often include neoadjuvant chemotherapy (chemotherapy prior to surgery), surgical intervention, and adjuvant chemotherapy (chemotherapy after surgery). In addition to surgical resection of the tumor, reconstruction options include autograft, allograft, a metal endoprosthesis, Van Ness rotationplasty, or a growing metal endoprosthesis for those children who are still growing.
Ewing Sarcoma
Including Ewing-like tumors (round cell sarcomas with EWSR1 gene fusion with non-ETS family members, CIC-rearranged sarcomas, and BCOR-rearranged sarcomas
Ewing sarcoma is a type of cancer that primarily affects bones, but it can also occur in soft tissues around the bones. It mostly occurs in children and teenagers. This cancer often appears in areas like the pelvis, legs, and arms. Symptoms can include pain, swelling, and sometimes fever or other general signs of illness. Treatment typically involves a combination of chemotherapy, surgery, and sometimes radiation.
Chondrosarcoma
Including Grade 1, Grade 2, Grade 3 chondrosarcoma as well as dedifferentiated chondrosarcoma
Chondrosarcoma is a type of cancer that forms from cartilage cells. It usually affects older adults and can occur in various parts of the body, such as the pelvis, legs, arms, or ribs. Symptoms may include pain, swelling, or a noticeable lump in the affected area. Unlike some other types of bone cancer, chondrosarcoma doesn’t respond well to chemotherapy, so treatment often involves surgery to remove the tumor.
